Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease are leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the UK. Appropriate and effective management of these conditions and associated risk factors such as hyperlipidaemia are the cornerstones to improving general well being and health outcomes. In 2008, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) published guidelines on the management of type 2 diabetes (CG66) and lipid modification (CG67). This article aims to give a practical critique of the clinical management strategies recommended by these guidelines. Br J Diabetes vasc Dis 2009;9:69—74
Key Words: NICE guideline type 2 diabetes lipid modification
