Fatness, faltering metabolism and fecundity: an expanding challenge in reproductive medicine

Scott M Nelson

Naveed Sattar

Increasing adiposity worldwide is having a negative impact on health with a rise in metabolic disorders and co-morbid conditions including reduced reproductive capacity in men and women. Furthermore, maternal adiposity and hyperglycaemia are strongly associated with adverse outcomes for both mother and baby, with the potential for long-term impact on the offspring. Introduction of a spectrum of public health strategies covering the entire reproductive lifespan are required to minimise the clinical burden of obesity-related disease. Br J Diabetes Vasc Dis, 2009; 9:36—37

Key Words: overweight • obesity • reproduction.
