Review: Obesity and pregnancy: an obstetrician's view

Obesity is a fast growing epidemic worldwide, especially among young women with childbearing potential. Obesity during pregnancy not only increases risks for deep vein thrombosis, hypertension, and gestational diabetes mellitus but also significantly increases risks to the mother and the baby. The risk of late foetal death in obese nulliparous women is many times higher than in normal weight women, possibly secondary to placental dysfunction. This review offers a synopsis of the consequences of obesity in pregnancy. Br J Diabetes Vasc Dis 2009;9:19—22
