Review: Landmark developments in clinical cardiology over the last 50 years

Desmond G Julian

7 Netherhall Gardens, London, NW3 5RN, UK, djulian{at}dial.pipex.com

The practice of cardiology has been transformed over the last 50 years. In the 1950s, cardiologists were mainly concerned with rheumatic valve disease and congenital heart disease in the older child and adult. Today, the focus is almost exclusively on coronary heart disease. The changes are partly due to epidemiological factors but, to a large extent, they are due to a series of remarkable advances. These include diagnostic techniques, such as echocardiography and coronary arteriography, and both medical and surgical treatments. Most of these developments are the result of the work of innovative individuals.

Key Words: congenital • rheumatic • coronary heart disease • surgery • angioplasty • coronary care.
