The importance of assessing and treating sexual dysfunction in the cardiac patient

Emma Martin

Department, St Thomas' Hospital, 6th Floor, East Wing, Lambeth Palace Road, London, SE1 7EH, UK, emma.martin{at}gstt.sthames.nhs.uk

In March 2001 the Male Cardiovascular Health Clinic was set up to assess and treat sexual dysfunction (which is primarily erectile dysfunction) in male cardiac patients. Emma Martin (Cardiac Sexual Advice Sister) and Dr Graham Jackson (Consultant Cardiologist) saw the need to offer care to cardiac patients and their partners for sexually related conditions that were otherwise going unnoticed and untreated. Emma Martin gives an account of her role, which has proved challenging and rewarding.
