The Diabetes Prevention Program: will it really change the way we manage glycaemia?

Gérard Slama

University Pierre et Marie CURIE, Paris, Hotel-Dieu Hospital, Paris, 1 Place du Parvis Notre Dame, 75004 Paris, France, gerard.slama{at}htd.ap-hop-paris.fr

Intervention in the pre-diabetic state to prevent diabetes, its complications and cardiovascular death provides an enticing therapeutic target. Although no drug treatments are as yet indicated for this condition, recent clinical evidence may support active intervention strategies to prevent the conversion of impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) to type 2 diabetes in the future. This article briefly reviews the current position in this field and considers the implications of findings from the latest clinical trials in subjects with IGT.

Key Words: metformin • impaired glucose tolerance • diabetes prevention • lifestyle intervention.
