Schedule 11 — impact on treating erectile dysfunction

Geoff Hackett

Department of Urology, Good Hope Hospital, Rectory Road, Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, B75 7RR, UK, ghac876762{at}aol.com

Since 1998, NHS therapy for erectile dysfunction (ED) has only been available under schedule 11 regulations. This involves restriction to certain medical conditions and restrictions of the quantity of medications. A new category was introduced, namely a patient confirmed by a consultant as suffering from `severe distress'. Recent evidence suggests that ED is closely related to many important men's health issues and that restricting access to therapy in this way is both wasteful of resources and leading to missed healthcare opportunities. In the light of recent evidence, certain aspects of schedule 11 need to be reviewed.

Key Words: schedule 11 • erectile dysfunction.
