Department of Clinical Chemistry, Northern General Hospital, Sheffield, UK Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease are leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the UK. Appropriate and effective management of these conditions and associated risk factors such as hyperlipidaemia are the cornerstones to improving general well being and health outcomes. In 2008, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) published guidelines on the management of type 2 diabetes (CG66) and lipid modification (CG67).
