Despite the availability of several new pharmacological interventions for the treatment of type 2 diabetes since the previous guidance in 2002, the incretin mimetic exenatide is the only newer agent included in the new guideline. Herein, the key priorities around glycaemic management are reviewed and consideration is given to whether the guideline is likely to have major implications for management of people with type 2 diabetes.
