Review: Diabetes nursing: a personal perspective of the last 50 yearsUniversity of Warwick, 12 Dore Road, Dore, Sheffield, S17 3NB, UK, mackdiab{at}aol.com The last 50 years have embraced phenomenal advances in medicine and change in the delivery of healthcare. Nursing in general and diabetes nursing in particular have made and continue to make an important contribution to this evolutionary, even revolutionary process. The history and progress of nursing, the development of the role of specialist nurses and nurses in primary care, particularly practice nurses working with general practitioners, have made a difference in the continuing care of people with diabetes in the UK. Nurses working with their medical colleagues and other healthcare providers have many skills and talents to offer which need to be identified, valued and fostered. The art of nursing is encompassed in the support, care and education of people with diabetes.
