Review: Fifty years of type 1 diabetesDivision of Medicine, Diabetes and Metabolism, Medical School Unit, Southmead Hospital, Bristol, BS10 5NB, UK, Edwin.Gale{at}bristol.ac.uk Research is done by people. Type 1 diabetes was discovered because certain people were in certain places at the right time. Perhaps in a parallel universe someone else would have made the same observations or reached the same insights, but that is not what happened here. It has been my privilege to know many of the people concerned with the discovery, and this is my version of what they achieved.
Key Words: type 1 diabetes history HLA islet cell antibodies.
